  • Sentence: The noxious gas pouring from the cannister was luckily dilluted by the rainfall.
3. Placid: peaceful, calm
  • Sentence:The placid lake, untouched by wind or wave, had a calming effect on the girl by the shore.
4. Remuneration: payment for work done
  • Sentence: When the auto workers did not recieve thier contracted remuneration they went on strike.
5. Talisman: lucky charm
  • Sentence: The talisman, a lucky rabbit's foot that he kept in his pocket, helped him to pass his math test.

6. Oracle: someone or something that gives wise council or prophesy
  • Sentence: The oracle not only told me what my future would be like, she also told me how to deal with it.
7. Specimen: an individual, item, or part that represents the whole
  • Sentence: The horse galloping across the field was a fine specimen of its breed.
8. Infernal: fiendish or diabolical; awful; relating to the underworld
  • Nuclear weapons are considered by many to be infernal weapons of war that must never be used at any cost.

Literary Terms

9. Satire: A literary work in which human vice or folly is attacked through irony, derision, or wit; irony, sarcasm, or caustic wit used to attack or expose folly, vice, or stupidity.
  • Sentence: South Park is a satirical show that makes fun ofmany people and institutions in the United States.
10. Allegory: A symbolic representation; the representation of abstract ideas or principles by characters, figures, or events in narrative, dramatic, or pictorial form.
  • Sentence: Cinderella is a conservative allegory for every girl's passage from childhood to adulthood.
11. Pastoral: Of or relating to the country or country life; a literary or other artistic work that portrays or evokes rural life, usually in an idealized way.
  • Sentence: Most fairy tales begin with a pastoral setting, usually in the forest or countryside, and then move to a less friendly setting in order to help children learn that adulthood is not always easy or fun.
